Action Fence Company of Chattanooga installs fences and gates in four Tennessee counties: Hamilton, Bradley, Sequatchie, and Marion. We're a family-owned fence company on Hixson Pike in Hixson, TN, in business since 1981.

Which Tennessee Counties Do You Cover?

Four: Hamilton, Bradley, Sequatchie, and Marion. Our office is on Hixson Pike in Hamilton County and our materials yard is in Sale Creek, and in more than four decades we've installed fences in virtually every neighborhood around us.

Do I Need a Fence Permit in Hamilton County?

Usually not for a fence 7 feet or shorter. Hamilton County Building Inspection exempts fences 7 feet and under in unincorporated areas, and the City of Chattanooga, the county seat, exempts them under its building code too. Some towns set their own rules: Signal Mountain lists fences under its building permits, and Collegedale and Soddy-Daisy run their own codes offices.

What About Bradley, Sequatchie, and Marion Counties?

Bradley County (seat: Cleveland). Inside Cleveland, the city's Building Division handles permits, and zoning allows a wood or masonry privacy fence up to 8 feet behind the front of the house. Outside the city, including McDonald, Bradley County Building Inspections handles permits.

Sequatchie County (seat: Dunlap, the county's only incorporated city). Dunlap requires a fence permit, and a licensed survey must go with the application for a property-line fence unless all adjoining owners sign off.

Marion County (seat: Jasper). Marion County Building & Planning issues permits in unincorporated areas. In Jasper and Whitwell, zoning says front and side setbacks don't apply to fences, though corner sight-line rules do.

Are Pool Fences Different?

Yes. Tennessee follows the 2018 residential code, which calls for a pool barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Hamilton County?
