Farm and Field Fence Installation in Chattanooga
Field fence with rail, crossbuck, field fence on T-post, board, split-rail, and horse fence for pasture and acreage, plus repairs when a line goes down.
Action Fence Company of Chattanooga, family-owned in Hixson, Tennessee since 1981, builds farm fence across Hamilton County, the Sequatchie Valley, and North Georgia. Our field fence with rail comes as 3- or 4-rail with field fence, 4-rail crossbuck with field fence, or field fence on T-post.
What Is Field Fence With Rail?
It's a wooden rail fence with field fence (woven wire) attached, and it works for homes as well as farms. This page covers the fence itself: the styles, rails, and wire. For who we fence for and why, from livestock to pasture security, see our agricultural fencing page.
We build field fence with rail three ways: 3- or 4-rail with field fence, 4-rail crossbuck with field fence, and field fence on T-post when you need a long, practical run.
What Other Farm Fence Can You Build?
Board fence, split-rail, horse fence, woven wire, and barbed wire, plus custom farm gates. White three-rail vinyl ranch rail gives the same farm line with no paint. If you aren't sure which suits your animals and your land, we'll walk the property with you at the free consultation.
Do Local Rules Limit Farm Fence?
In some places, yes. Unincorporated Gordon County, around Resaca, allows barbed, hog, and electric wire in its rural districts; LaFayette prohibits barbed wire in residential districts; and Murray County, around Chatsworth, limits agricultural-type fencing to its Agriculture district. In Dunlap, a fence on a property line needs the Building Official's approval and a licensed survey unless every adjoining owner signs off. We check the rules for your parcel before we build.
Is Farm Rail Right for You?
Most people come to us with a reason, not a material: a new dog, a pool, a neighbor, a pasture. Here's how the five materials we install compare.
| Material | Privacy | Pets & Kids | Maintenance | Typical Cost | Looks Best On |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Stain or seal every few years | Older neighborhoods, wooded lots | |||
| Vinyl | Rinse it off | New builds, HOA subdivisions | |||
| Aluminum | Very low | Pools, front yards, driveways | |||
| Chain Link | Very low | Large yards, commercial lots | |||
| Farm Rail | Low | Acreage, pasture, long drives |
More dots mean more of that quality. Cost is relative to the other materials we install; every job is priced on its own. Building a pool fence? In Tennessee and Georgia, a residential pool barrier must be at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. We build pool fence to that rule.

Do You Repair Farm Fence?
Yes. When a livestock fence is down, you need it fixed quickly, and we repair perimeter fences and grazing-yard fences. If you're not sure whether the old fence can be repaired or should be replaced, call us and we'll take a look.
Farm gates are sized for what comes through them, and they can be wood, vinyl, aluminum, or chain link, with an automatic operator on the entrance you use every day. New farm fence carries our one-year craftsmanship warranty; materials carry the manufacturer's warranty.
How It Works
How a Fence Gets Built
Four steps from the first visit to the last post. Most residential jobs take about two days on site once materials arrive.
- 1
Consultation
We walk the property, talk through what you need, and recommend options that fit your yard and budget.
- 2
Measure and Proposal
A fence consultant takes precise measurements, then presents a formal proposal.
- 3
Materials Ordered
Once you're under contract, materials are bought and shipped to our storage yard in Sale Creek.
- 4
Installed in About Two Days
On install day the crew meets you for a final look at property lines and gate placement, then builds. The average job takes about two days; size and surprises can change that.
What's the difference between 3-rail and 4-rail field fence?
The number of wood rails above and along the field fence. Four rails make a taller, stronger-looking line; three rails cost less. A 4-rail crossbuck adds an X between posts for a farmhouse look.
Do you build horse fence?
Yes. Horse fence is one of the agricultural fences we build, along with board, split-rail, and woven wire. We'll talk through what suits your animals at the consultation.
Can you work around existing fence?
Usually. We can repair sound sections of an existing fence or replace it, and we'll tell you which makes sense when we see it.
Can a farm entrance have an automatic gate?
Yes. Farm gates can carry a gate operator, keypad, and remotes like any driveway gate. See our automatic gates page for what comes with a standard operator.
