Action Fence Company of Chattanooga, family-owned since 1981, installs wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, and farm fence in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, from our office in Hixson, about 15 to 25 minutes from downtown. Fences 7 feet and under need no building permit inside the city, except in the St. Elmo, Fort Wood, Battery Place, and Ferger Place historic districts, which require a Certificate of Appropriateness.
Do I Need a Fence Permit in Chattanooga?
Not for a fence 7 feet or shorter, unless the property sits in one of the city's four local historic districts. Inside the city, permits come from the Land Development Office on Market Street. The 2024 zoning code lets fences sit on the lot line and leaves height to the building code, which exempts fences 7 feet and under from a permit. St. Elmo, Fort Wood, Battery Place, and Ferger Place require a Certificate of Appropriateness for a new fence, and St. Elmo's guidelines call for front pickets no taller than 3 feet and rear privacy fences no taller than 6.
What Is the Ground Like in Chattanooga?
Much of the city sits on cherty red clay over limestone. The Tennessee River runs through the middle of town and Missionary Ridge splits the east side, so ridge lots are full of chert, and limestone ground can hide sinkhole-prone pockets. We auger or drill as the ground calls for and set posts in concrete.
What Are Homes and Properties Like in Chattanooga?
Chattanooga runs from historic in-town neighborhoods like St. Elmo, Highland Park, Fort Wood, and Ferger Place to suburban Hixson and parts of East Brainerd. In the historic districts, a short picket in front and privacy in back fits the guidelines. In the newer neighborhoods, HOA covenants vary block to block.
What Are the Landmarks in Chattanooga?
Downtown and the riverfront, where we installed the black aluminum fence along Riverfront Parkway. Volkswagen at Enterprise South, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee on Cameron Hill, Unum, TVA's offices, I-24, and US-27.

A fence consultant takes precise measurements, then presents a formal proposal.
- 3
Materials Ordered
Once you're under contract, materials are bought and shipped to our storage yard in Sale Creek.

Installed in About Two Days
On install day the crew meets you for a final look at property lines and gate placement, then builds. The average job takes about two days; size and surprises can change that.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Chattanooga?
Not for a fence 7 feet or shorter, under the city's building code. Fences in the St. Elmo, Fort Wood, Battery Place, and Ferger Place historic districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness first. We confirm your address before we quote.
How tall can my fence be in Chattanooga?
The city's zoning code doesn't set a front or rear number; height is governed by the building code, and 7 feet and under is permit-exempt. Historic districts set their own limits, and HOA covenants can set theirs.
Can you set posts in rock?
Yes. Ridge soils around Chattanooga are cherty clay over limestone. We auger or drill, then set posts in concrete so the fence stays plumb.
